Coach Schoener's Match Report 2/11/12

Your Husky Rugby Club traveled up to Vancouver to take on a deep UBC squad. The forecast called for heavy rains, but the rain never showed up, but that certainly didn’t affect the outcome of the match. The Husky’s traveled light up across the border as injuries and the inability to cross the border changed the line up from last week. That didn’t seem to affect the confidence of the squad and riding high off the UofO victory, the guys were looking to make it two league wins in a row.

From the first kick UBC showed they came to play, deciding to run out of their own 22 forcing UW to play up on the line and a perfectly placed kick by the UBC flyhalf caught UW out of position and bounced up right into the hands of a streaking UBC wing, put UBC on the board 7-0 right out of the gates. Immediate injuries saw the UW already depleated backline with very few options and a shoulder injury by inside center Konstatin Rehbein forced a move that put the UW starting hooker Danny Auerbach out into the centers. UBC displayed what they are most known for which are ball skills, speed, and a high rugby I.Q. and put 5 tries dotted down at the half.

UW stepped up the defense in the second half and put together some nice phases that took them down within one meter of scoring, but the UBC defense stood strong and kept the Dawgs from scoring. The intelligent kicking game UBC displayed kept the UW off their game all day, and UBC kept attaching in the second half, which brought 5 more tries to end the match 56-0 in favor of UBC.

The entire team is disappointed by the performance Saturday, but the decision to not stew on the loss, but to learn from it and look forward to next week’s home match against Eastern Washington University has all the players looking for revenge.

Steve Rast, UW Alum, Hosts the Huskies and Ducks in Eugene

UW and Oregon Rugby Players are hosted by Steve Rast (in Red) at Eugene CrossFit

The Dawgs traveled down to Eugene on February 4th to play the Ducks, and thanks to the generosity of one of our Husky Rugby alums, the UW players were hosted after the match and were well fed before they hit the road and drove back to Seattle. Steve Rast (~'99) played for the Dawgs in the late 90's and he used some of his connections to host both the UW and Oregon players at the Eugene Crossfit Gym for a post-match BBQ. Both UW and Oregon Players & Coaches hung out after the match and shared some stories from the game - thank you Steve for hosting!

Steve Rast is a Strength and Conditioning Coach with over a decade of experience ranging from personal training, running CrossFit gyms, and teaching at the University of Oregon's PE Department. He has remained involved with the sport of rugby and will be acting as the strength coach for an English rugby squad that will be playing in the Vegas 7's this coming weekend. Your Husky Rugby Club traveled down to Eugene to kick off the league season against the University of Oregon, looking to avenge a home loss to the Ducks a season ago. The skies opened up and the sun was shining on a beautiful day for Northwest Rugby on the fantastic setting of Oregon’s Riverside Pitch located adjacent to the Willamette River.

It was apparent from the first whistle that both teams, who finished in the bottom half of the league last year, were looking to make a statement for this season. The first 20 minutes was a back and forth physical battle where neither team was willing to give up ground. UW finally put together a some phases that brought them close to the 22 meter line where a hands in the ruck penalty on Oregon gave UW a shot at goal. Hooker, Danny Auerbach slotted a penalty goal in the 24^th minute to give UW a 3-0 lead. Moments later, blind side flanker Ryan Byarlay broke through the defense for a 20 meter scamper and the match’s first try. A missed conversion put the UW up 8-0, but Oregon responded well with a backline move that broke into UW territory, and a penalty near the goal line gave Oregon a quick tap and go try at the whistle, that ended the first half at 8-5 with the momentum in Oregon’s favor.

The UW responded well in the second half, and the fitness level of the UW started to take control of the match. Outstanding play by both UW locks, Zach Zaharoff and John Lambert gave great push in the scrums, and were dominant on the line-outs, but it was a pass by Zaharoff to a streaking Kendal Dresel that dotted down the first try of the second half. UW stuck to its game plan to use the leg of flyhalf Kiel Rasp, to pin Oregon deep into their own territory and pressure for mistakes and it paid off minutes later as a mishandled kick gave the UW possession deep in Oregon territory and a strong run by Kiel Rasp put him in for the Dawgs third try. Kiel wasn’t done there, and 14 minutes later had another strong run for his second try, giving the UW a 27-5 lead. Oregon responded well and caught the Dawgs on their heels scoring a try to make it a 27-10 match. UW regrouped and weathered the comeback to end the match with a 27-10 victory.

It was a great start for the UW, who finished last year with only 1 league victory. Your Dawgs will now prepare for a drive into Canada and a tough match against the University of British Columbia.

UW Hosts BYU for "Husky Rugby Clubhouse" Dinner

After a hard fought match, the Huskies hosted a "Husky Rugby Clubhouse" dinner for BYU on UW Campus. The meal was a catered pasta buffet which fed over 85 BYU & UW players, coaches, and staff. At each table, every other seat was occupied by a UW and BYU player, and both sides ate together and shared in the camaraderie and post-match traditions of the sport of rugby. Thank you to all the Husky Rugby Alumni Members which helped sponsor the event! Stay tuned for post-match Husky Rugby Clubhouse events at upcoming home games that will be open to players, parents, and alumni.

BYU beats UW 48-5

Match Report:

Your Husky Rugby Club kicked off the season with a hard fought match against one of the nations top rated programs. The Cougars of BYU traveled to the great Northwest for a 3-day tour that landed a Friday night match up on Jan 27th against the Dawgs under the lights of the IMA.

With temperatures dropping to near freezing temperatures, the UW warmed the crowd and got BYU's attention by striking first. Sophomore scrum half stand out Justin Santos turned a messy scrum into opportunity, finding daylight near the sideline, and his jaw dropping ability to evade defenders put the UW up 5-0 in the first ten minutes.

BYU was up to the challenge though and found the try line three times in the first half. An impressive try line stance by the UW defense that was capped by a crippling hit from UW's outside center, and Man of the Match, Konstantine Rhubein to a BYU winger, ended the half with BYU up 19-5.

BYU's attention to detail and impressive fitness overcame UW in the second half, scoring five unanswered tries to end the match 48-5.

The scoreline did not tell the story of this match as UW had a lot of bite and played a very crisp physical match. BYU was very complimentary of our style of play, physical approach, and attitude on and off the pitch.

It was a great platform to begin our season and get a taste of what high performance rugby is like in this country. Every match is an opportunity for growth and all in all was a step in the right direction for the UW Rugby Club.

Preparation is happening this week for the beginning of UW's NCRC league season, and first up is a highly anticipated match up against the Ducks of Oregon down in Eugene, where your Dawgs will be looking for some payback from a loss to the Ducks a season ago.

Alumni Membership Dues for 2012

Dear Husky Rugby Alumni,

The Husky Rugby Alumni Association is run by volunteers and funds itself through the generous contributions of alumni, friends, and supporters. Your contribution help fund basic administrative costs, social events, fundraising activities, and basic purchases for the Husky Rugby Club.

We are now accepting alumni dues for the year 2012. As a dues paying member, you will get free food and drink at Husky Rugby Clubhouse post-game socials, discounts at the annual Golf Tourney and Alumni Weekend, and recognition as an "official" member of the Husky Rugby Alumni Association.

The standard annual membership dues are $100, purple membership dues are $250, and gold membership dues are $500. If you're a recent grad within the last 2 years, dues are $50.

Donations Requested to host BYU on Jan 27th

BYU will be making a mini tour of the Northwest in late January to play CWU on Jan 26th, UW on Jan 27th, and OPSB on Jan 28th. The Huskies Friday night game will be on UW IMA Turf Field #3 (next to the IMA and Montlake parking lot). The official game time is still being determined but kickoff will be at approximately 6PM. This is only the second time UW has played BYU, and the last matchup was in the 2005 playoffs when BYU came from behind to win 29-24 (see image).

The Huskies and BYU will play hard during the game, and after the game, in true rugby tradition, UW will be hosting BYU for a post-match dinner. The Husky Rugby Alumni Association is arranging a catered dinner on UW campus for both BYU and UW. The social will be a simple dinner for approximately 70 players and coaches, and we are seeking alumni donations to help offset the cost of the meal. All donations are tax deductible and will be credited as your alumni dues contribution for 2012.

We are seeking donations at the following levels:
$500 - Husky Gold Level (we are seeking 1 donor)
$250 - Purple Membership Level (we are seeking 2 donors)
$100 - Standard Membership Level (we are seeking 2-3 donors)

New Head Coach - Congrats to Brian Schoener

We are pleased to announce that Brian Schoener (UWRFC '00) is the new Head Coach of the Husky Rugby Club. Brian has been acting Head Coach this Fall and led the Huskies through strong performances at the NCRC 7's and Pacific Coast 7's tournaments. Brian played for the Huskies for several years in the late 90's and went on to play with Seattle RFC and Old Puget Sound Beach. He is a former USA Eagle and was capped during the 2006 Churchill Cup in Santa Clara, CA. Congrats Brian!

Brian is uniting with current forwards coach and former USA Eagle Joe Rissone. Both will be assisted by a highly skilled veteran staff of volunteers: Matt Kuzma (backs), Kevin Waizenhofer (backs), and Steve Bush (forwards).

Brian is currently looking for a full time backs coach. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact the alumni at uwrugbyalumni@gmail.com

Brian will be taking over for Shawn Loudenback, who will still remain active with the squad as Club Director. Thank you to Shawn for his leadership and dedication over the last several years as Head Coach! He continues to donate countless of hours to the program each year.

As a volunteer run club program our coaches never get the full credit they are due. We thank each and every one of them for helping shape the lives of our student-athletes.

Here are some photos of the first win in UW Rugby Club history, where UW beat Oregon 6-3 in 1963. The photos are courtesy of Joe Superfisky, UWRFC '63-65, who scored the winning penalty kick. Joe is retired and currently lives in Bothell, WA with his wife, Anne.
