Our Annual Dinner was held on February 24th at Club Husky in Husky Stadium. The venue was terrific and well received, its size and layout enabled ruggers young and old an opportunity to congregate and mingle in the bar before dinner reacquainting each other with Husky Rugby lore, rekindling and making new friendships before moving into the dining area for the main program. Turnout was good, representatives from each decade were on hand, as well as a strong turnout from the team and recent graduates. Of significance, this year’s dinner marked the formal integration of the men’s and women’s alumni under the HRAA banner, several women alumni attended to mark the occasion.
Over dinner we enjoyed an entertaining and enthusiatic talk by John Clavin, President of the PNW Referees Society, and World Cup TMO referee. John regaled us with the referee’s perspective of good, bad, and questionable play delivered with a touch of Irish humor.
Coach Mike Alfstad presented an update of the season, conference dynamics, and our prospects for the playoffs. Mike announced that at season’s end his five year coaching commitment would also end. Mike has been a tremendous and inspiring leader driving our players and program further each year, he has been instrumental refining and developing the character of many a player on and off the field. The HRAA is indebted to Mike and his wife Mary Jo for their commitment to Huksky Rugby and his leadership. While his coaching career has ended Mike will remain actively involved as Director of Rugby Programs.
Awards and recognitions were presented throughout the night, and as tradition has it, the Paddle Raise completed the festivities.
We look forward to next spring when the HRAA will celebrate the 55th anniversary of Husky Rugby.
