A New Era Begins: Eight Recruits Join the Pack
Husky Rugby welcomes its largest and most talented incoming class yet, with eight new players from Washington, Canada, and England—reflecting the program’s growing momentum, regional ties, and rising national profile.

This recruiting class marks a major milestone for Husky Rugby, with eight incoming players (Pictured from left to right: Gabriel Palomo, Sebastian Smith, Rowan Landin, Rylan Reinebach, Dan McCourt, Xavier Phillips, Shunsuke Nakatani, and Maxime Cauchie) —the largest group in recent history and a testament to the program’s rising momentum. The surge in interest reflects several key factors: a growing social media presence, stronger on-field performances, connections with Washington Selects high school reps, and relationships with local coaches and clubs. More Washington high school athletes are approaching the University of Washington with confidence. Thanks to improved understanding of the admissions process, applying to UW feels less like a shot in the dark and more like a clear pathway for rugby players. As a result, the program is seeing more applicants, more rugby-related offers, and more homegrown talent choosing the best state school in Washington.
Incoming Forwards
- Gabriel Palomo (Camas Rugby Club, WA) – A powerful prop and leader, Gabriel also captained the Camas High School football team, guiding them to a state final at Husky Stadium.
- Rylan Reinebach (Camas Rugby Club, WA) – Fresh off an international EIRA tour in Italy, Rylan brings size, athleticism, and versatility at the Lock/No. 8 position.
- Dan McCourt (Leeds Rugby, England) – With over a decade of rugby experience, Dan arrives from England as a flanker ready to make an immediate impact.
- Rowan Landin (Budd Bay, Olympia, WA) – A raw and promising talent in the forward pack, Rowan adds size and potential to the Husky engine room.
Incoming Backs
- Maxime Cauchie (Liberty Rugby Club, WA) – A veteran scrumhalf and leader, Maxime has consistently represented the Washington Selects and brings a calm, strategic presence to the backline.
- Xavier “XP” Phillips (Liberty Rugby Club, WA) – A speedy wing returning to the game after a two-year break, XP is eager to reignite his rugby journey with the Huskies.
- Sebastian Smith (Snoqualmie Rugby Club, WA) – A strong athlete with just one year of experience, Sebastian represents the first wave of players from the newly founded Snoqualmie Rugby Club, started by Husky Rugby sponsor Sam Bennett-Cumming of Phinney Ridge Painting.
International Addition
- Shunsuke Nakatani (Tokyo / Brentwood College School, Canada) – Originally from Tokyo and most recently a standout at Brentwood College in British Columbia, Shun joins the Huskies thanks to a connection facilitated by Husky Alumni President Kevin Fuller, who attended Brentwood with Shun’s father.
As the program continues to grow in quality and visibility, this incoming class reflects the strength of regional development, international ties, and the draw of a rising Husky Rugby culture. Welcome to the Pack!
