Match Report: Season Opener vs WSU & UPS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Beresford Booth

The rain held off on Saturday for our Apple Cup game, allowing the Dawgs to play some expansive rugby. Two challenging exhibition matches leading up to this game tested our first side, both hard-fought losses but crucial in our preparation for the season. With 14 of our first and second side players either injured, absent, or sick (including would-be captain against WSU Owen Prentice), we had to reach deep into our roster to form our first side and reserves. Rostered players have been eager to step up and take the 1st XV jersey, and didn’t disappoint!

The last 3 years we have won the Apple Cup game, with score margins of 7pts, 7pts, and last year 8pts. This year we tallied an impressive 34pt margin. The dawgs moved the ball well, and kept the ball alive post-contact. Our defensive alignment improved dramatically, but issues to be addressed include goal-line defense…

Our opening try was by Hayden Wiggins, freshman and new to rugby. His speed and wrestling background led to impressive pre-season showings, and was an undeniable starter this weekend for the 1st XV.

Our younger players led the way on Saturday – Tries were scored by Hayden Wiggins, Fr.; Thomas Williams, So. (2), Xavier Moimoi, So.; Halen Moeck, So. (2), and Lucas Hunziker, Sr. (2); Shunsuke Nakatani, Fr. Seb Sosa added 9 with kicks.

1st XV Final score: UW 49 – WSU 15

As the rain settled in, our 2nd XV prepared to play University of Puget Sound. They came short, so we lent them some of our players. The opening UPS try was scored by one of our own, Jamie Park from Fullback.

2nd XV Final score: UW 17 – UPS 12

Tries by Jack Efrusy, So.; Dylan Weber, So.; Owen Ferrell, Fr.One conversion by Luca Giessler-Norseng, Fr.

This week we get back in the gym and classroom in preparation for Oregon State in Corvallis, our first official league fixture. This preseason and exhibition series has been strenuous, and built confidence and resilience in our Dawgs. They are ready for the season!
