September Coach's Corner: Preseason Training
Each month, we will hear from UW's Director of Rugby and Head Coach, Will Wheaton, to learn more about exciting behind the scenes of the Husky Rugby season. This month's Coach's Corner highlights the team's preseason training.

Monday marked the final day of our 10-day preseason training. This is the first formal pre-season UW rugby has held since pre-covid (if it ever occurred in the past…). The last 10 days have given us an opportunity to kickstart our conditioning, knock the rust of basic skills, and install our attack shape and defensive system.
Most importantly, it was a time to welcome new players into the team, share meals, and start forging bonds for the 2025-2026 squad. In total, 52 players attended, with a consistent 30 or so at every training, as they balanced wrapping up summer jobs and internships. Veterans hosted new players who arrived before their official move-in dates and helped each other move into dorms. It was a warm welcome for incoming freshmen.
New talent brings an injection of energy, power, and rugby IQ. Returning players who we’ve hoped to see step into leadership have done so. We are seeing gaps in ability closing, as experienced players coach others up. The coaching staff is energized and motivated to empower these young men. It’s a good time to be a part of Husky Rugby!!!
Please plan to join us for our first HOME game against WSU on October 18th!
