On Saturday, the Huskies traveled down to OSU for a sevens tournament where they played four games and came out 3-1.
First up was the University of Oregon B with a narrow warm-up game of UW 10 - 7 UO. The Ducks went on to win the tournament with a win over OSU.
Next, we faced OSU, playing in their fourth sevens tournament of the season. They were skilled and organized, and pulled away with a resounding win of UW 7 - 31 OSU.
For our third game, we played WSU who had a couple of strong players who could break the line and spin the ball wide quickly. We managed to contain them and offloaded well for a win of UW 22 - 12 WSU.
Our fourth game was the consolation final, where we squared off against Western Oregon University. They effectively counter-rucked and poached, with our ruck arrival time lagging under fatigue late in the day. Despite a tough contest at the breakdowns, we were able to pull away with a try in the final minutes, winning the game UW 17 - 12 WOU.
Considering our limited sevens practices and only one mini-tournament with the University of Puget Sound, I was proud of the effort and autonomy the team showed on the field. For the second two games, they led their own warm-ups and held each other accountable, demonstrating the kind of on-field leadership we're striving for.
Overall, placing 3rd of 8 teams was a good test for our first outing. Next weekend, we will build on that, playing tougher teams including Western Washington at Boise State University.
FINAL PLACING, 3rd of 8. MVP Brian Cain with 5 tries.
