How CWU’s Entry to D1AA Will Test Husky Rugby

In a significant shift for West Coast collegiate rugby, Central Washington University (CWU) has announced it will discontinue its varsity men’s and women’s rugby programs at the end of the 2024–2025 academic year. The decision, driven by state budget cuts and rising operational costs, marks the end of an era for one of the nation’s top-ranked varsity rugby teams (source).

But while CWU is stepping away from varsity status, it’s far from stepping off the field.

CWU has committed to honoring all current and incoming rugby scholarships through the 2025–2026 season and is transitioning into a high-level club program. With a core group of talented, D1-caliber athletes choosing to stay and compete, CWU remains a powerhouse in the making — and they're bringing that energy into our conference.

Last year, the CWU men’s team finished #8 nationally, and their returning players bring with them a potent mix of experience, physicality, and tactical skill. Their arrival will not only raise the level of competition — it will redefine it.

What This Means for Husky Rugby

For the University of Washington, CWU’s entry into the conference represents more than a new name on the schedule — it’s a major shift in the competitive landscape, and an exciting opportunity for growth.

Raising the Standard

Facing a program with CWU’s pedigree challenges every team to improve — and Husky Rugby is no exception. These matchups will demand greater attention to detail in preparation, deeper physical and mental resilience, and more consistent execution under pressure. This is the type of high-level competition that pushes programs from good to great.

Fueling Player Development

Game film becomes more valuable. Training sessions take on new urgency. Competing against seasoned players who’ve operated at a varsity level accelerates development and sharpens every aspect of performance. These are the kinds of contests that build elite athletes — and stronger teams.

Strengthening Recruiting & Regional Standing

A conference that includes a former varsity program like CWU enhances the appeal of playing in the Pacific Northwest. For prospective players, it signals a high level of competition and credibility. For UW, it’s an opportunity to showcase the program's progress and position itself as a destination for serious student-athletes who want both top-tier academics and meaningful athletic development.

Elevating the Entire Conference

CWU’s transition adds legitimacy to the region’s rugby scene. Their presence brings added attention, elevated expectations, and more competitive fixtures — all of which benefit the conference as a whole, including Husky Rugby.

Looking Ahead

While CWU redefines itself in this next chapter, Husky Rugby welcomes the challenge — and the opportunity. It’s not just about playing another strong opponent. It’s about rising to meet a new standard and continuing to evolve as a program. We look forward to testing ourselves against a team with proven pedigree and competing at a level that brings out the very best in our players.
