DAWGS WIN!
The win over Oregon last week proved to be a boost in belief for the Dawgs. They have begun to see their hard work pay off, and believe in the systems that we're coaching, and trust in their teammates to put in the work and make their tackles.
OSU opened with a penalty kick, and a few minutes later we retorted with one of our own.
A bit of scrappy play and keeping the ball alive resulted in a UW try by scrum half Jsame Fola, converted by fullback Sebastian Sosa, halfway through the first half. The 0-0 mindset meant there was no lapse in focus, we worked our way down the field and Hooker/Captain Brian Cain Jr. barged over for another try. At 40 minutes, OSU had a huge line break and dotted down for a converted try.
Halftime Score:
UW 15-10 OSU
A long period of goal line defense exposed a few mistakes, and allowed OSU to take another PK for 3. Kiwi flanker Thomas Williams has been fighting through shoulder pain the last two games, and finally had to be pulled by the trainer. We put in Freshman Halen Moeck (Thomas's flat mate) at 6, now in his 3rd ever rugby game. We were faulted in the second half for too many consecutive penalties, and number 8 Vaea Tangitau was shown a yellow. During that 10-minutes, a man down, we controlled possession, and gained territory, scoring a mauling try from the lineout with 7 forwards, with newbie Halen Moeck dotting his second career try.
After returning to play, Vaea Tangitau scored two more tries. Vaea was selected by Alex Goff as D1AA player of the week in the United States!!! In the final play of the game, in a deja vu moment recalling the end of the first half, OSU broke free for a final converted try. (We will be discussing IQ, possession, and killing the clock at key moments of the game!)
Final Score: UW 32-20 OSU
Man of the Match: Dillon Tran (prop) and Jsame Fola
The seconds had a miserable first half, down 5-31 at halftime, mostly a result of two things:
- Trying to tackle OSUs giant second side props (300+ lbs/ea?!) around the waist.
- Defensive line integrity against some electric speedsters. OSU has athletes!
The second half was closer, UW 14-17 OSU with the Dawgs scoring two converted tries to their 3.
Tries by fullback Ethan Brown, flyhalf Matt Curtis, and Prop/Captain Andrew Stanfel.
Man of the Match: Rory Stobie (Lock), and Peter Golden (Prop).
As we break for the half, we look to our first League game against WWU, at home on Feb 1st. IF YOU'RE AN ALUMNI, IT'S TIME TO COME OUT AND SUPPORT!!! They are the team to beat, with a 3-1 record. OSU and UW sit at 2-2, while Oregon and Boise are both 1-2 after their game was cancelled due to travel conditions.
Goals and individual development plans will be set for the break, so we come out strong and prepared.
